MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s Rich Rodriguez and Boston College’s Jeff Jagodzinski have been named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region 1 co-coaches of the year, the AFCA announced today.
Rodriguez captures the award for the second time after leading the Mountaineers to within a game of the national championship game. West Virginia finished 10-2 this year, capturing the Big East title and the conference’s BCS bowl berth. The Mountaineers will face No. 3 Oklahoma in the 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz.
West Virginia under Rodriguez had managed three consecutive seasons of double-digit victories – a first in school history.
Jagodzinski led Boston College to a 10-3 record his first season there and a trip to the Champs Sports Bowl to play Michigan State on Dec. 28.
Other Regional Bowl Subdivision winners include Mississippi State’s Sylvester Croom (Region 2), Illinois’ Ron Zook (region 3), Kansas’ Mark Mangino (Region 4) and Air Force’s Troy Calhoun (Region 5).
The AFCA will announce its five 2007 national coach of the year recipients at the 2008 AFCA Convention in Anaheim, Calif.
