West Virginia interim coach Bill Stewart and Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson know each other very well.
Wilson got an early start in the profession as Stewart’s graduate assistant coach when the two were working on Dick Crum’s staff at North Carolina.
“He’s one of my best friends,” Wilson said of Stewart. “In fact, I called him up when Rich (Rodriguez) was leaving and I asked him if he was Alexander Haig – if he was in charge.”
Wilson says he has a great deal of respect and admiration for Stewart.
“He’s a passionate guy,” Wilson said. “He loves that state. They’ve had a lot of success and he can add a wrinkle here and there for them.
“Bill Stewart has been a head coach before, so he has had made game decisions,” Wilson said.
Wilson is happy Stewart is at least auditioning for the WVU coaching job as the program’s interim coach for the Fiesta Bowl.
“I know that place is in flux,” Wilson said. “But I’m glad he got an opportunity for at least a short period of time to be in charge. He was a special guy in my life. I’m me and I’m different than him but I’m sure there are things that I say or do that is a reflection of spending time and working with him.
“We had a unique and close bond.”
