MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University forward Ashley Banks was named a finalist for the Umbro/Soccer News Net Player of the Year Award today. WVU’s senior is one of 21 of the nation’s top women’s college soccer players vying for the award.
Banks was named a third team NSCAA All-American and a finalist for the 2007 Soccer Buzz National Player of the Year. The forward’s 15 goals and 38 points this season are the most-ever by a senior women’s soccer player. Earlier this season Banks was named first team all-BIG EAST, the BIG EAST co-Offensive Player of the Year and an ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The nominations included athletes playing at colleges within each coverage area for the Soccer News Network, as well as athletes from the area playing throughout the country. Banks, an Annandale, Va., native, is one of three at-large selections.
Online fan voting accounts for 40% of the total toward the award. The remaining 60% of the vote will be cast by the editorial staffs of the six web sites, as well as from sponsor Umbro.
