MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University midfielder Amanda Cicchini was named a Soccer America MVP today. Cicchini was one of 11 players named to the College Women's MVP first team, its version of an All-America team.
Cicchini, an Oakville, Ontario, native, finished with eight points on four assists and two goals this season. The central midfielder was outstanding in controlling the tempo of play while working end line to end line. A two-time NSCAA all-region selection, Cicchini was a first team all-BIG EAST pick this season.
“What a great honor for Amanda,” says Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “What she does on and off the ball for us is so important. She has the rare ability to get the offensive attack started and connect our offense with our defense. The All-America recognition is well deserved.”
Named to the 2007 Hermann Trophy Watch List, Cicchini scored goals in the season opener against Bowling Green and at BIG EAST foe Pitt. Great on the ball, she served assists against Penn State, Villanova and Wake Forest. The three-time all-league midfielder was also named to the all-tournament team at the 2007 BIG EAST Championship.
Cicchini, a second-team NSCAA All-American this year as a junior, is the first Mountaineer since Chrissie Abbott (2002) to be named a Soccer America MVP.
