Women's Basketball: No. 15/16 WVU routs Bonnies

BOCA RATON, Fla. – West Virginia University’s nationally ranked women’s basketball team (6-1) defeated St. Bonaventure (5-2), 64-37, Saturday afternoon at FAU Arena in opening game action of the FAU Holiday Classic.
Senior guard LaQuita Owens scored a team-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, while senior forward Chakhia Cole notched 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
No. 15/16 WVU led wire-to-wire and shot 50.9% for the contest (28-55). The Mountaineers also grabbed 38 rebounds and notched nine steals.
In first half action, WVU shot a blistering 64.0% from the field (16-25) led by Owens’ 10 points and senior guard Meg Bulger’s nine points. Lateefah Joye came off the bench to tally six points and a block in 10 minutes of play.
With WVU leading 18-14 with 10:09 left, WVU’s defense clamped down and held the Bonnies scoreless for nearly the final 10 minutes. The Mountaineers used a 17-2 run to close the first half. St. Bonaventure’s Tiara Johnson’s two free throws with 21 seconds left in the half stopped the scoring drought. That was all WVU needed as it rolled to victory in the second half.
Dana Mitchell scored a game-high 22 points for the Bonnies.
WVU is back in action Sunday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m. against Columbia in day two action of the FAU Holiday Classic.
