MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team completed its fall season racing six crews in four events at the Head of the Occoquan, in Fairfax, Va., this past weekend.
The highlight of the event was the varsity four’s first place finish in the collegiate 4+ race. The team made up of Brittany Brooks, Kensie Phillips, Kim Benda and Caroline Rettig, with coxswain Stephanie Brown crossed the finish line at 20:14.7, defeating second place Maryland by a 24 second margin.
“The top performance of the day was the varsity four’s win,” says Head Coach Jimmy King. “They started third across the line and were able to come back and pass the two crews that started ahead of them.”
Also, performing well was the WVU B team in the collegiate 4+ race that crossed the finish line in 10th place with a time of 21:30.2.
In other races, the collegiate varsity eight finished in eighth place with a time of 19:23.9, while the novice eight, team A finished 13th with a time of 22:08.7. The Novice 4+ team finished in fifth place with a time of 25:41.1.
“The Head of the Occoquan provided the varsity squad an opportunity to gauge our progress this fall,” says King. “Without a doubt, progress is being made, but we still have a long way to go to be the program we want to be. We want to have strong performances not just from one crew, but from the entire program.”
