Wrestling: Six Wrestlers Advance in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The West Virginia University wrestling team advanced six wrestlers to the third round of the championship bracket on Friday, Nov. 30, at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
Leading the Mountaineers are 174-pounder Chance Litton, Jared Villers at 197 pounds and 157-pounder Zac Fryling. Each has advanced to the third round and is one win away from reaching the quarterfinals.
Litton defeated No. 8 seed Auby Geving of Columbia in a 2-0 decision. In the second round he decisioned Zac Cornett from Colorado School of Mines, 9-3.
Following a first round bye, No. 7 Fryling earned a major decision over Kyle Dobbs of California Davis, 14-6. He will continue with third round action later in the day.
No. 6 Villers also earned a convincing win following a first round bye, scoring a 17-3 major decision over Purdue’s Logan Brown.
Heavweight Dustin Rogers, seeded No. 4, wrestled his first match of the season and earned a 16-4 major decision in the second round against Rick Alcala of California Davis.
No. 10 David Jauregui at 149 pounds lifted WVU with a 9-2 decision over Matt Pridgeon of Dickinson State in the second round to advance. No. 10 Kurt Brenner also advanced at 184 pounds after defeating Jake Taovs of Dickinson State in the second round with a 7-2 decision.
Donnie Jones was defeated in his first match at 165 pounds, but earned a 14-4 major decision over Devan Lewis of Northern Colorado in the consolation bracket to prevent elimination.
Sophomore Mark Anderson at 125 pounds started the tournament with a 5-2 decision over Nick Murray of Virginia Tech, but was eliminated after falling in his next two bouts.
Third round action will occur in the afternoon, and the quarterfinals are slated to begin at 7 p.m. PST. Semifinal and championship play will occur on Saturday, Dec. 1, in both the championship and consolation brackets.
