MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - As the first semester of school nears its end and our Mountaineer football team plays their last regular season game, its just about time for another exciting season of WVU gymnastics.
Hours and hours of hard work have been spent in the gym throughout the first few months of school in preparation of this year’s season. After graduating five talented seniors we were able to gain seven freshmen with tremendous talent that have really fit in well with the team. Just before Thanksgiving break we were able to see the result of all of our hard work with our annual Turkey and Indian intra squad meet.
The Indians danced their way onto the floor with spears in hand, led by seniors Kara Weaver and Rachel Hardin. The turkeys gobbled their way into the competition under the leadership of seniors Jaime Gold, Margaret Ann Moore, and Katie McGregor. The Indians began the competition with all competitors nailing their vaults. The turkeys followed with an equally impressive performance on bars as everyone hit their routines.
For the second rotation the turkeys tackled the vault as the Indians moved on to bars. The Turkeys put up an impressive performance on vault with five vaults with a 10.0 start value competed.
Entering into the third rotation it appeared as though the Turkeys may have had a slight lead after a few minimal mistakes by the Indians on bars, but the Indians were not willing to give up without a fight. The Indians finished out the meet with strong performances on both the balance beam and floor exercise. Although the turkeys put up a strong showing on floor, a few minimal bobbles on beam were just enough to fall short of the Indians.
All in all everyone did an awesome job! It was a great day of incredible gymnastics and friendly competition. The impressive showing at the turkey and Indian meet is just a slight indication of the great things to come for this season! Let’s Go Mounties!
