MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team will participate in this weekend’s 26th annual Cliff Keen Invitational on Friday, Nov. 30- Dec.1, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
The invitational features several of the top wrestlers in the country from nationally-ranked schools including Ohio State, Missouri, Navy, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois. Edinboro and Pitt from the Eastern Wrestling League will also compete in the tournament.
WVU’s participation in the tournament will be based on individual matchups in eight different weight classes and will not feature any dual meets. The seedings for each individual in their respective weight division will be determined by the tournament committee on Thursday, Nov. 29.
The Mountaineers come into the tournament with a 1-1 record in dual meets after defeating Sacred Heart 37-3 but losing to No. 2 Iowa State 24-9 on Sunday, Nov. 18., in Vestal, N.Y. Juniors Chance Litton and Kurt Brenner along with senior Jared Villers will look to lead WVU after each went 2-0 in the “Sprawl + Brawl” event.
Head coach Craig Turnbull believes the competition in this weekend’s invitational will benefit his team as they prepare for other challenging tournaments as well as EWL play.
“This invitational is one of the three national-caliber tournaments we have this season,” says Turnbull. “No one is at mid-season form yet, but this tournament can better prepare us as the season goes on.”
