Women's Basketball: WVU Moves to No. 15 in AP

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s basketball team (5-1) rose one spot to No. 15, garnering 494 votes, in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, released today.
Ranked No. 16 last week, with 462 votes, WVU defeated American, 65-61, in opening round action of the URI Invitational this past weekend. The Mountaineers then went on to defeat tournament host Rhode Island 80-47 to win the tournament. West Virginia fell to No. 1 Tennessee in Charleston, W.Va., 67-49.
Four other BIG EAST teams are ranked in the poll: No. 2 Connecticut, No. 5 Rutgers, No. 17 DePaul and No. 22 Notre Dame.
For her efforts during the last week, senior center Olayinka Sanni was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second consecutive week. Sanni averaged 17.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game during the 2-1 week for WVU. She shot 64.9% (24-37) including a 21-point performance in the championship game of the URI Invitational. For her efforts in the tournament, she was named the most valuable player.
West Virginia is back in action Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. when it takes on former Atlantic-10 rival St. Bonaventure (5-1) in FAU Holiday Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.
