Women's Basketball: No. 16 WVU Faces Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. -- West Virginia University's 16th-ranked women's basketball team takes on host Rhode Island in the championship game of the URI Invitational, Saturday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Ryan Center.
West Virginia defeated American 65-61 to get to the championship contest. The Rams downed Brown 61-55 after being down by as many as 10 midway through the second half.
WVU leads the all-time series with its former A-10 opponent 14-7 in a series that began in 1984. The Mountaineers are 6-4 all-time in Kingston while Rhode Island has won four straight in the series but was last played in 1994.
West Virginia is led in scoring by four of its seven seniors: Olayinka Sanni (16.8), Chakhia Cole (12.0), Meg Bulger (11.8), LaQuita Owens (10.6). Sanni leads the team with 8.8 rebounds per contests and has reached double figures in scoring in all five contests so far this season.
WVU coach Mike Carey is just one win shy of reaching 400 for his career.
Following the Rhode Island contest, West Virginia returns to action, Saturday, Dec. 1, against St. Bonaventure, at the FAU Holiday Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.
