MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– West Virginia University baseball coach Greg Van Zant today announced the 2008 baseball schedule.
The 58-game schedule is highlighted by 37 home contests including playing host to College World Series contender and BIG EAST foe, Louisville.
The 2008 season is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 22, when the squad travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face Akron before hosting the annual Baseball at the Beach Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Feb. 29-March 2.
“We think it’s an excellent schedule to challenge our team,” comments Van Zant. “We have one of the largest home schedules in school history. We have five conference series at home and just four on the road, and we’re excited about that. We have some marquee teams coming into Morgantown. Every game is a big game for us and we’re excited to start playing in a couple months.”
The Mountaineers return five starters in the field and two starting pitchers from last season's 29-22 squad, along with a recruiting class of 13 new signees.
The team will host Duquesne in its home opener on March 4, at Hawley Field at 3:00. WVU will open BIG EAST play on March 20, at home when the Mountaineers host Pittsburgh in a three game series.
