Women's Basketball: WVU Defeats Cornell

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 19/20 West Virginia University women’s basketball team defeated Cornell, 93-52, Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the WVU Coliseum.
In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, West Virginia (3-0) had three players reach double figures in scoring. Senior Olayinka Sanni scored a game-best 22 points on 9-13 shooting while senior guard Meg Bulger came off the bench to score 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Senior forward Chakhia Cole netted 17 points, reaching her 1,000th career point in her 100th career and consecutive start.
The Big Red (1-2) jumped out to a 12-4 lead with 16:17 left in the first quarter on four 3-point baskets, three by Cornell leading scorer, Kayleen Fitzsimmons, who finished the contest with 15 points.
But the Mountaineers used a 24-4 run over the next nine minutes to secure a 28-16 lead, a lead it would not relinquish. During the run, Bulger hit three 3-pointers.
For the game, WVU shot a blistering 50.0% from the field (33-66) while holding the Big Red to 32.7% (17-52). West Virginia also out-rebounded Cornell, 46-26, and forced 21 turnovers. All 14 Mountaineers saw action with 12 players scoring at least two points.
West Virginia returns to action, Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. when it takes on defending national champion Tennessee at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, W.Va. Tickets for that contest are available at the Civic Center Box Office at (304) 345-SHOW.
