WVU (2-0) opened the contest with a 17-0 run and never looked back as it led 46-12 at the half. The Mountaineers’ smothering defense limited the Red Flash (1-2) to just 23.3% (10-43) shooting from the field. West Virginia also forced 27 turnovers.
All 14 Mountaineers played at least six minutes and 13 scored, led by senior center Olayinka Sanni’s 14 points and 11 rebounds. The contest marked Sanni’s second straight game she’s posted a double-double. Senior guard Meg Bulger scored 11 points including three 3-pointers. Junior guard Sparkle Davis had nine points, all in the first half, as did freshman guard Liz Repella.
WVU outrebounded the Red Flash 40-28 and grabbed 19 offensive boards. The Mountaineers also committed just six turnovers and tallied 22 assists and 13 steals.
Samantha Leach led St. Francis with 10 points and four rebounds.
With the win, West Virginia improved to 34-1 all-time against non-conference foes at the WVU Coliseum under Mike Carey.
The Mountaineers return to action Sunday, Nov. 18, at 12:30 p.m. in the WVU Coliseum when they take on Cornell. The contest marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
