MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 8, 2007) – West Virginia University’s women’s basketball team has been ranked No. 25 in CBSSports.com’s preseason college basketball magazine, recently released.
WVU has now been ranked by three major preseason magazines heading into the 2007-08 campaign (No. 14 by Athlon and No. 24 by Lindy’s). WVU was also ranked No. 23 in ESPN.com’s early preseason poll last April. The three rankings mark the first time during the Mike Carey era that the Mountaineers have received national preseason recognition.
The Mountaineers return all five starters from last year’s NCAA second round team that boasted a 21-11 overall mark and an 11-5 BIG EAST record. WVU also boasts the largest senior class in school history (seven) and returns nine letterwinners from last year’s team that held opponents to just 56.3 points-per-game. All-America guard Meg Bulger also returns after missing the last season and a half with a knee injury.
“These rankings show how far we’ve come as a program,” head coach Mike Carey says. “We’re proud of the recognition but they don’t mean a lot at this time. But it should give our players something to work towards and certainly give them something to prove.”
Preseason practice for the 2007-08 season begins, Friday, Oct. 12, with Mountaineer Madness sponsored by Full Throttle at the WVU Coliseum. Gates open at 8 p.m.
