MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia moved up five spots to eighth in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 and three spots to ninth in this week’s USA Today Coaches’ Poll, both released Sunday.
West Virginia (5-1) went on the road and defeated Syracuse 55-14 Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. It was the most points an opponent has scored at the 27-year-old Carrier Dome. The victory evened the Mountaineers’ Big East record at 1-1.
South Florida moved up to fifth in both polls while Cincinnati advanced to 15th in this week’s AP poll and 17th in the Coaches’ Poll. Rutgers, a 28-23 home loser to the Bearcats, dropped out of this week’s Top 25. The Scarlet Knights play at Syracuse this weekend while the Bearcats have a big home game coming up against struggling Louisville.
West Virginia has already played half of its schedule in 36 days and will have this weekend off before playing host to Mississippi State at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Bulldogs improved to 4-2 with a 30-13 win yesterday against Alabama-Birmingham.
Mississippi State has a big SEC game at home this weekend against Tennessee before traveling to Morgantown.
