MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 13/21 West Virginia University men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 3/3 Notre Dame tonight in South Bend, Ind. The Mountaineers are now 6-4 on the season, 2-3 in BIG EAST play.
Notre Dame’s Ryan Miller headed the lone goal past freshman goalkeeper Zach Johnson at the 62:11 mark off of a corner kick, hooked in by senior Joseph Lapira, to secure the Irish victory.
“We gave up a disappointing goal on another set piece,” comments Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc. “We didn’t take advantage of the chances we had.”
WVU’s Johnson recorded 15 saves in the match. The Irish outshot the Mountaineers 23-12 and held an 8-1 corner kick advantage. The loss marks the tenth time this season where the Mountaineers’ fate has been decided by just one goal.
Next up, the Mountaineers will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers for a midweek conference face off. The match is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
