MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Three Mountaineer shooters shot personal bests as the West Virginia University rifle team defeated NC State by a score of 4618-4506 today at the WVU rifle range. The squad, under second year Head Coach Jon Hammond, are off to a 1-0 start for the second consecutive year.
WVU shot a total of 2317 in smallbore and 2301 in air rifle. The Mountaineers broke the previous school record set at 2304 in smallbore, which was set at GARC Championships, February 27, 2005 and begin the season 1-0.
Senior Lafe Kunkel and Brandi Eskew shot personal bests in smallbore hitting 582 and 580 totals, respectively. Doug McAllister shot a 580 in air rifle, good for the sophomore’s personal best.
“We had a great showing in smallbore today and shot very well,” comments Hammond. “This was a great way to begin the season. We have work to do in air rifle but overall I’m very pleased.”
The rifle team will next be in action on Oct. 14 when WVU travels to Ohio State. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. Last season, the squad defeated the Buckeyes 4547-4444 at the Mountaineer rifle range. The 103-point victory over OSU would be the first of three 100+ point wins for West Virginia last season.
