MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Natalie Cocchi’s goal just 1:40 into the second half gave West Virginia a 1-0 victory over Louisville Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.
Cocchi’s second goal of the year came off a corner kick from Kim Bonilla, who played a ball to Ashley Banks. Banks served the ball into the middle where Cocchi was able to beat Cardinal goalkeeper Joanna Haig for the game’s only goal. Haig came into the match having given up just five goals this year.
The goal was the 14th of Cocchi’s career.
West Virginia dominated play, especially in the second half, accumulating a 22-to-5 advantage in shots and an 9-0 edge in shots on goal. The Mountaineers also had an 8-to-2 advantage in corner kicks.
“It was a great win tonight and we created lots of scoring opportunities,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “It was a total team effort as we receive great play from all of our starters and from our bench. We really came out strong in the second half and it proved to be the difference.”
Mountaineer goalkeeper Mallory Beck recorded her fourth shut out of the year without making a save.
Louisville’s Haig was officially credited with seven saves.
The victory boosts No. 22-ranked West Virginia’s record to 7-3-1, 3-0-1. Louisville falls to 7-3-1, 2-2.
The Mountaineers remain in Morgantown to face Cincinnati Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in another BIG EAST contest. The Bearcats took a 3-6-1 record into tonight’s match at Pitt.
Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
At halftime of Sunday’s contest the Mountaineers will present a check to the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center at Ruby Memorial Hospital for money raised during last spring’s soccer tournament for breast cancer awareness. WVU raised more than $8,000 from the event.
The match will also be streamed live on CSTV All-Access.
