MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team ended their fall season at the Intercollegiate Southern Championships in Columbia, S.C., on Sunday, Oct. 28.
Ashley Renee Pilsbury, the only Mountaineer to reach the semifinals, was defeated by Davidson’s Trisha Wang, 6-4, 6-3, in B-2 singles. Pilsbury ended fall play with a 16-1 record, winning three out of four tournaments.
“I was pretty happy with Ashley’s performance this tournament,” says Head Coach Marc Walters. “It’s a good start to her career.”
In A-2 doubles, Natalia Prinz and Stephanie LaFortune defeated James/Long of VIT, 8-3, to finish first in the consolation rounds.
Colleen Speaker and Gabriela Blaskovicova also finished well in the A-3 consolation doubles. They defeated Rollins/Knox of Erskine, 8-3, on Sunday to end their fall play.
In B-2 consolation doubles, Pilsbury and Monique Burton defeated Martinez/Nerenschwander of South Carolina-Upstate, 8-6, to cap off a well-played season.
“Our girls competed hard and it was a good experience for them to go against some good players,” says Walters. “Hopefully we will be able to carry some momentum into the spring season.”
