MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer players Krystle Kallman and Carolyn Blank have been recognized for their outstanding play last weekend in a 2-0 shutout against USF on Oct. 26, and 3-1 win over Marquette on Oct. 28.
Kallman was named BIG EAST defensive player of the week league officials announced today. A Woodbury, Minn., native Kallman led the WVU defense in holding the Bulls to zero shots on the night, the third time in school history and first time ever against a BIG EAST team. The shutout was the eighth of season for WVU’s defense.
On Sunday, the junior defender held Marquette’s top two scorers to zero goals and two shot attempts. Overall, Marquette recorded 10 shots against the Mountaineers, seven below its season average.
The weekly conference honor is the sixth of the season for WVU. Other BIG EAST award winners were Notre Dame’s Kerri Hanks (offensive player of the week), St. John’s Jaime Beran (goalkeeper of the week) and Georgetown’s Ingrid Wells (rookie of the week).
TopDrawer Soccer recognized Blank as one of 11 members on its Women’s College Team of the Week. Blank, a 2006 Soccer Buzz Freshman All-American, dominated the midfield and was brilliant in the air, winning nearly ever head ball.
The Toms River, N.J., native also found the net against Marquette, tying the match at 1-1 in the 57th minute. Defensively, the sophomore helped the Mountaineer defense post a shutout against USF.
The Mountaineers own a 13-4-1 overall record and won the BIG EAST American Division title for the second straight year.
