MORGANTOWN, W.Va – After winning her first round singles match, West Virginia University women’s tennis player Stacey Percival was defeated by Fordham’s Catherine Kellner, 6-4, 6-3, on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the ITA Women’s Eastern Regional Tournament in Yorktown, Va.
The loss concluded the trip for Percival and Monica Lyskawa, who were the only Mountaineers that competed in the tournament.
Percival advanced to the second round in singles play after defeating Vanja Lakic of Niagara, 6-4, 6-0, on Saturday, Oct. 20.
Lyskawa lost her qualifying singles match, but played well with Percival in the first round of doubles play, defeating Brown/Hanusz of Liberty, 8-2, before falling in the second round.
Head Coach Marc Walters feels the competition his players faced over the weekend will help in future tournaments.
“I thought Stacey and Monica hit the ball well all weekend,” says Walters. “It was a good experience and hopefully it will make us sharper going into this weekend’s tournament.”
The Mountaineers head to Columbia, S.C., on Friday, Oct. 26, to compete in the Women’s Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Championships.
