Swimming: Mountaineers Defeat Georgetown

MEET RESULTS
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Georgetown this past weekend at the McCarthy Pool.
Both WVU teams had excellent showings, breaking pool records throughout the meet. The men’s team won the meet 143-88, while the women’s team won 160-81.
In the 200 yard medley relay, both the men’s and women’s teams won the race in record times. The women’s team comprised of sophomores Morgan Callaway, Stephanie Shupe, Kitti Veisz and Kayla Andrews, finished with a time of 1:47.89, breaking the previous record of 1:50.14. The men’s team of Michael Walker, Nick Delic, Felipe Cunah and Payton Brooks came in first stopping the clock at 1:35.33, respectively, beating the previous record of 1:36.63.
Also setting pool records this past weekend were sophomore Justin Galbreath and senior Tina Gabrilo. Galbreath took first in the 1650 freestyle stopping the clock at 16:14.58, smashing the previous record of 16:20, 62. Gabrilo took first in the 400 IM with a time of 4:34.85, beating the previous record of 4:36.49.
The men’s and women’s diving teams also had a fantastic showing, winning three out of four events. For the women senior Erica Pfeiffer won the one and three meter events with scores of 234.70 and 236.55. On the men’s side sophomore Cameron Whitelam took first in the 3 meter, breaking the pool record with a score of 297.85.
“The team competed very well against Georgetown. We had some very good swims in all events,” says Head Coach Vic Riggs. “I think the past two meets were great preparation for our next set of meets against Cincinnati, Marshall and Louisville. Those meets will be very competitive and tough for the teams. This past weekend showed us what we can do when we stay within ourselves and compete as a team.”
The Mountaineers will take the weekend off to prepare for their first BIG EAST match at home on Saturday, Nov. 3, against Cincinnati. Meet time is set for 6 p.m.
