MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Monica Lyskawa of the West Virginia University women’s tennis team was defeated in her first and only match of the day at the ITA Women’s Eastern Regional Tournament in Yorktown, Va., on Friday, Oct. 19.
No. 19-ranked Anne Houghton of Army defeated No. 20 seed Lyskawa, 6-1, 6-3, in qualifying singles. Lyskawa will resume play on Saturday, Oct. 20, when she teams with Stacey Percival as the No. 45 ranked tandem against Brown/Hanusz of Liberty in an 8:45 a.m. doubles match.
No. 118 seed Stacey Percival will play her first singles match on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against No. 117-ranked Vanja Lakic of Niagara.
Despite her defeat, Head Coach Marc Walters remains upbeat about Lyskawa’s performance.
“She just got off to a slow start even though she was hitting the ball well,” says Walters. “She wasn’t as effective on some of her shots, but handled herself great and made some good adjustments.”
Walters remains hopeful that Lyskawa can continue to utilize her talent in doubles play.
“Monica is definitely getting better and she’s using more and more of her game. So hopefully she can use that in doubles tomorrow,” says Walters.
