MORGANTOWN, W.Va.-The West Virginia University rifle team defeated Ohio State 4,623 to 4,452 today at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range in Columbus, Ohio. Senior Lafe Kunkel won the smallbore rifle competition shooting 585, breaking his personal best set at 582. Freshman Tommy Santelli totaled 583 to finish first in air rifle.
The Mountaineers scored 2,306 in smallbore and 2,317 in air rifle to create the 4,623 winning total. Ohio State scored 2,195 in smallbore and 2,257 in air rifle.
“Lafe (Kunkel) had a personal best, and a school record as well, and Tommy (Santelli) shot a solid score”, comments Head Coach Jon Hammond. “That’s a great result and overall this is a great start for the team.”
The squad, under second year Head Coach Jon Hammond, is off to a 2-0 start.
