STORRS, Conn. – Seventeenth-ranked Connecticut took advantage of two West Virginia defensive breakdowns in a 2-0 UConn win Sunday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. The Huskie win at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium snaps 21st-ranked West Virginia’s three-game win streak.
A breakdown in the Mountaineer defense led to UConn’s first goal at the 22:57 mark of the first half. The Huskies worked the ball to the corner and senior midfielder Meghan Schnur was left wide open in front of the net. Midfielder Kacey Richards crossed the ball to Schnur who sent a ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The UConn goal was the first allowed by West Virginia in nearly 400 minutes, dating back to Syracuse’s first half goal on Sept. 30.
West Virginia controlled possession early in the match and had its best scoring chance 10 minutes in when junior forward Deana Everrett fired a shot off the cross bar from 18 yards out. The Mountaineers took five shots in the first 45 minutes of play.
Connecticut added an insurance goal in the 54th minute from junior forward Elizabeth Eng. Eng, out in the left flank, caught WVU off guard and sent a ball past goalkeeper Mallory Beck from 20 yards out.
True freshman Kerri Butler made her second appearance of the season for West Virginia. The Fredericksburg, Va., native played the final 31 minutes in goal and recorded one save.
WVU had another solid scoring chance with 17:20 remaining in the contest. Everrett faked a cross from the corner and attacked the net, finding sophomore midfielder Carolyn Blank at the penalty kick marker. Blank’s one-timer was sent just wide of the right post.
Despite the loss, West Virginia outshout UConn 15-14 on the afternoon, with many shots coming late in the match.
Connecticut remains unbeaten in BIG EAST play with a 6-0-1 record, 10-2-1 overall. The Mountaineers’ loss is the first in conference action this season. WVU now sports a 5-1-1 BIG EAST record, 9-4-1 overall.
