MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- Hitting dominated game one but the pitchers had the upper hand of game two of the Blue-Gold World Series as Matt Yurish and Eric Saffell combined to pitch a five-hitter as the Gold squad defeated the Blue team 6-2 Thursday at Hawley Field.
Yurish started on the mound and went five innings giving up five hits while striking out two. Saffell came out of the bullpen and tossed four innings of no-hit baseball to get the win as the Gold team plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie and make a winner out of the senior.
The Blue team scored first in the top of the third scoring two runs off of Yurish on a two RBI single by designated hitter Chris Enourato. The Gold answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth off of Blue starter Ross Fetterly. Austin Markel, Dan DiBartolomeo and Grant Buckner opened the bottom of the frame with consecutive singles off Fetterly, with Markel and DiBartolomeo eventually scoring. Fetterly pitched well allowing only those two runs in five innings pitched while striking out four.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when the Gold plated four runs off of losing pitcher Chris Enourato. Enourato relieved Fetterly in the bottom of the sixth and struck out four of the six hitters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the bottom of the eighth with the score still tied 2-2, DH Joe Agreste led off with an 0-2 basehit and then moved up to second base when shortstop Jedd Gyorko was hit by a pitch while trying to sacrifice bunt. Markel then sacrifice bunted both runners into scoring position. The Blue team decided to intentionally walk DiBartolomeo to set up a double-play.
Red shirt freshman Buckner then broke the tie with a hard hit RBI single to left field. Gold freshmen Mark Darlington and Vaughn Blackman also singled driving in runs to make the final score 6-2.
Buckner, DiBartolomeo and Blackman all registered two hits for the Gold while first baseman Tyler Scruggs led the Blue offense with a double.
The two teams will square off again in game three of the Blue-Gold World Series at 5 p.m. today at Hawley Field. Admission is free.
