MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 21 West Virginia University cross country team will run at the Penn State National Open on Friday, Oct. 12, in University Park, Pa. The race will be a 6K and take place at the Blue and White Golf Courses at 10 a.m.
“After a week off, this is a good race for our team to come back and compete in,” Head Coach Sean Cleary says. “It will be good to perform against some of the best teams in the region.”
Defending race champion Syracuse, along with No. 17 Duke and host No. 30 Penn State, will be among the top teams competing.
The Mountaineers slipped one spot in the U.S. Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll this week from No. 20 to No. 21 after having an off week. West Virginia currently ranks third in the Mid-Atlantic region behind Princeton and Georgetown.
WVU last competed and took second at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., on Sept. 28. The Mountaineers finished ahead of three nationally ranked teams, topping then No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 25 Texas Tech and No. 26 Tennessee. Also, top runners Marie-Louise Asselin, Keri Bland and Maria Dalzot made their season debuts at the race.
