Baseball: Jenkins, White on Preseason Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – West Virginia University’s Justin Jenkins and Adam White were named to the Big East all-preseason team announced recently by the conference.
Jenkins, a senior outfielder from Ridgeley, W.Va., batted .375 with 10 home runs and 49 RBI as a junior for the 36-22 Mountaineers. White, a sophomore centerfielder from Philipsburg, Pa., hit .368 with 27 RBI and 19 stolen bases. West Virginia was the conference’s top hitting team in 2006 with a team batting average of .339.
The Mountaineers were predicted to finish eighth in preseason polling ahead of Pitt, Seton Hall, Villanova and Georgetown.
St. John’s, 40-19 last year, was predicted by league coaches to win the Big East. Notre Dame, with new coach Dave Schrage, was picked to finish second followed by Louisville, Rutgers, Connecticut and Cincinnati.
Rutgers junior infielder Todd Frazier was named Big East preseason player of the year and Notre Dame sophomore Kyle Weiland was named preseason pitcher of the year.
West Virginia opens the 2007 campaign with a three-game series against Cleveland State in Winston-Salem, N.C., Feb. 16-18. The Mountaineers’ home opener is Tuesday, March 6 against Niagara.
