MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Blue team won 11 of the 18 head-to-head matchups as the West Virginia University gymnastics team hosted the annual Gold & Blue intrasquad meet on Sunday, Jan. 7, at the WVU Coliseum.
After trailing the Gold 7-6 going into the final rotation, the Blue squad swept the final event with five superb floor routines from Kiersten Spoerke, Ashley Wilson, Shelly Purkat, Tynisha Dennis and Janáe Cox to earn the 11-7 victory.
Gold squad did take the first event behind solid performances on the uneven bars from Jaime Gold, Katie McGregor and former EAGL rookie of the year Mehgan Morris.
Head-to-head competition winners were decided by a panel of celebrity judges, including men’s basketball coach John Beilein, assistant football coach Herb Hand, current Mountaineer mascot Brady Campbell and Greg DeSantis, the father of former WVU gymnast Alyssa DeSantis.
West Virginia opens the regular season hosting Michigan and James Madison on Friday, Jan. 12, at 7:30 p.m., in the Coliseum.
