Women's Basketball: WVU to Host Orange

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s basketball team will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Syracuse Orange in a pivotal Big East battle Wednesday night at the WVU Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
West Virginia (14-7, 5-3) has won its last six games overall and its last five in the conference. The Mountaineers’ most recent win came in a workmanlike 69-47 victory at Georgetown on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountaineers have three starters averaging in double-figures led by Olayinka Sanni who averages 14.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest. Sanni has scored in double digits in 10 consecutive contests and is ranked 20th nationally in field goal percentage at 56.5 percent.
LaQuita Owens pitches in 12 points per game. The streaky shooter has made 15 of her last 29 3-point attempts. Chakhia Cole rounds out the Mountaineers in double-figures scoring 11.4 points and pulling down 6.1 rebounds per contest. Cole dished out a career-best nine assists in the win at Georgetown.
Syracuse (8-13, 2-6) comes into the game losers of four straight and six of its last seven. Most recently, the Orange dropped a 78-61 decision to South Florida at the Carrier Dome on Sunday.
Syracuse is led by Nicole Michael who is averaging a team-best 16.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. The 6-2 freshman forward has recorded three consecutive double-doubles. Center Vaida Sipaviciute adds 13.9 points per game and forward Fantasia Goodwin chips in 12.8.
WVU leads the all-time series 9-7. The Mountaineers have won five consecutive games over the Orange and hold a 4-3 advantage all-time at the WVU Coliseum.
