MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s track and field coach Jeff Huntoon has announced the five team captains for the 2007 indoor and outdoor team.
The captains are: seniors Jessica Czaikowski (Tottenham, Ontario) and Halimah Bashir (Willingboro, N.J.), and juniors Abbie Stechschulte (Columbus Grove, Ohio), Maria Stover-Bartlett (Morgantown, W.Va.) and Alison Spiker (Ripley, W.Va.).
“The selection of the captains was not only based on the girls’ athletic performances but also their individual personalities and how each relates to her teammates,” says Huntoon. “The coaching staff and the rest of the team have a lot of respect for each of these captains and they will serve as great voices for the program.”
Each leader is well on her way to having an excellent indoor season, having qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in at least one event. Czaikowski, the only returning captain, has qualified in the 60 meter dash (7.58) and the 60 meter hurdles (8.60), while Bashir is a qualifier in the 400 meter dash (57.33).
Stechschulte is the BIG EAST leader in the pentathlon, having achieved an NCAA provisional score of 3,907 points at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 19.
Stover-Bartlett and Spiker are helping keep the distance squad on pace, qualifying for the 1000 meter run with times of 2:58.41 and 2:58.82, respectively.
The Mountaineers will compete again on Saturday, Feb. 3, when they host the State Farm Shell Games at the WVU Shell Building. The meet is expected to start at 9:30 a.m. and should last all day.
