Swimming: Men Win Shamrock, End Season Undefeated

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – West Virginia University’s men’s swimming and diving team won the Shamrock Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Rolfs Aquatic Center and successfully wrapped-up an undefeated regular season.
The 19th ranked men (13-0, 5-0) defeated Penn State, 193-177, Oakland, 252-115, BIG EAST opponent UConn, 273-97, and the 17th ranked host, Notre Dame, 228-142.
“I’m very happy with today’s performance and the way this season has gone so far,” said third year coach Sergio Lopez. “I never thought we’d have an undefeated season. We just wanted to do better than last season. Hopefully the alumni feel very proud right now.”
The women’s squad (9-4, 3-2) defeated both Oakland, 295-65, and UConn, 264-105, while falling to Penn State 243-127, and Notre Dame, 225.5-147.5. Additionally, five swimmers achieved NCAA ‘B’ standard times.
The Mountaineers starred the second day of competition winning the 200 medley relay. The women’s squad set a pool record with their first place time of 1:43.32. Freshmen Morgan Callaway, Kitti Veisz, Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews comprised for the win.
The men’s victory in the relay was both a pool record and a school record. Freshman Ivan Tolic, sophomore Andrew Langenfeld, and juniors Kevin Donohue and Nick Delic won the race with a time of 1:29.27.
The men’s squad was once again led by the steady stroke of junior Pablo Marmolejo. The Mexico City, Mexico, native won the 400 IM (4:00.69) and the 200 fly (1:48.16).
WVU took the top three spots in the 100 fly. Langenfeld won the event at 49.17, while Delic (49.51) and Marmolejo (49.73) followed at second and third, respectively.
Freshman Zoltan Povazsai recorded his 12th victory of the season, winning the 200 free (1:40.38).
The Mountaineers took the 100 breast, with Veisz recording an NCAA ‘B’ standard time of 1:03.12. The Budapest, Hungary, native’s second place in the 200 breast (2:16.96) was also a ‘B’ standard and a pool record. Donohue took first for the men in the 100 breast with a season best time of 55.34.
Tolic took first in the 100 back, setting a school record with his time of 49.40.
Sophomore Lindsey Largo took fourth in the 1650 free with an NCAA ‘B’ standard of 16:51.91.
Callaway followed with a second place finish in the 200 back (2:01.04). The Coatesville, Pa., native’s NCAA ‘B’ standard time broke both the pool record and school records.
Andrews was the last Mountaineer to secure an NCAA ‘B’ standard, breaking the pool record with her first place finish in the 100 free (50.15).
Freshman Sean Mahoney was the last individual winner for WVU, taking the 200 breast (2:02.79).
The invitational ended the regular season for WVU. The Mountaineers will now take the next two weeks to train and prepare for the BIG EAST Championship. The tournament will be held Feb. 14-17 in Uniondale, N.Y., at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. The meet is expected to last all day, every day.
