Swimming: Men Lead After Six Events at Shamrock

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – West Virginia University’s men’s swimming and diving team leads the competition after six events at the Shamrock Invitational at the Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend, Ind.
After Friday’s session, the 19th ranked Mountaineers (9-0, 4-0) had commanding leads over Oakland, Penn State, and UConn, while slightly leading 17th ranked and host Notre Dame, 64-46.
The men finished the night with four firsts, including both relays. The 200 free relay was won with a time of 1:22.59. Senior Kyle Williams, junior Nick Delic, sophomore Andrew Langenfeld and freshman Ivan Tolic comprised for the win.
Tolic and Delic joined juniors Kevin Donohue and Pablo Marmolejo for the 400 medley relay win, stopping the clock at 3:17.98.
Langenfeld and Marmolejo came up big in their individual events as well, winning the 50 free and 200 IM, respectively. Langenfeld was victorious with a time of 20.60, while Marmolejo won with a time of 1:51.97.
The women’s team (7-2, 2-2) finished Friday with strong leads over both Oakland and UConn.
The Mountaineers lone individual first came from freshman Kayla Andrews in the 50 free. The Newark, Del., native won the event with a time of 23.55.
Fellow freshman Kitti Veisz turned in another strong performance in the 200 IM, taking fourth with a time of 2:03.66.
The women finished the night with a victory in the 400 medley relay. Andrews and Veisz, along with freshmen teammates Morgan Callaway and Stephanie Shupe, combined for the time of 3:46.15, a new pool record.
The Mountaineers will compete in the second leg of the invitational on Saturday, Jan. 27. The second session is set to begin at 10 a.m. The invitational's final session will follow at 5 p.m.
