MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s basketball team (13-7, 4-3) heads to the nation’s capital to take on the Georgetown Hoyas (11-9, 1-6) Saturday afternoon at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
The Mountaineers enter the game having won their last five, including their last four Big East Conference games. Their most recent win came on Wednesday night, a dominate 74-56 victory over Marshall in Charleston.
Six-two center Olayinka Sanni leads a balanced West Virginia attack, averaging 13.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Sanni has reached double figures in her last nine contests.
Guard LaQuita Owens, the Mountaineers’ leading 3-point threat, is averaging 11.8 points per game. Chakhia Cole is the last Mountaineer in double-figures, averaging 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest. Cole turned in the seventh double-double of her career with a 20-point 11-rebound performance against Marshall.
Guard Sparkle Davis has also come on of late. The sophomore averages 8.9 points per game. Davis scored 16 points and made four 3-pointers against Marshall. Four different Mountaineers have tallied 20 points at least once so far this season.
"We're playing together; we're playing as a unit," said Cole. "We're defintely playing some great defense and we're rebounding well."
As hot as the Mountaineers have been recently, the Hoyas have been equally cold. Georgetown has dropped four straight contests and five of its last six. The Hoyas most recent defeat came on Tuesday night when they dropped an 80-62 decision to Cincinnati at home.
However, West Virginia is 0-7 against the Hoyas in McDonough Arena.
"We're trying to establish great things for this program and this university so this would be a great win for us to have, especially on the road," said Cole. "We really need this win."
The Hoyas are led by forward Kieraah Marlow who averages 16.4 points per game. Marlow, who is the only Hoya averaging in double-figures, enjoyed the ninth 20-point game of her career against the Bearcats. Forward Katrina Wheeler is second on the team in scoring, pitching in 8.9 points and pulling down 8.2 rebounds per game.
"They have a very big lineup, a 6-3 girl and a 6-5 girl, so we're looking for them to try and pound us on the inside; they have some good shooters coming off the bench," said Cole. "They have a good team."
The Hoyas average a mere 59.4 points per game. West Virginia has held its opponents to just 56.7 points per game this season, with only two opponents scoring 70 or more.
Georgetown leads the all-time series 10-6. WVU has won two straight in the series and three of the last four. The Mountaineers will be looking for their first-ever win at McDonough Arena. They are 0-7 all-time at the facility.
