MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s track and field team will travel to University Park, Pa., to compete in the National Open on Friday, Jan. 26 – Saturday, Jan. 27. The meet, hosted by Penn State University, will be held all day, both days.
The Mountaineers are coming off a very successful weekend which saw five more student-athletes qualify for the BIG EAST Championship and one achieve an NCAA provisional score.
At the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., junior Abbie Stechschulte scored 3,907 points, an NCAA provisional score, to win the pentathlon. Stechschulte’s score is the best score in the BIG EAST to date. Additionally, sophomores Clara Grandt and Raeleen Hunter qualified as well, in the mile (5:05.54) and the 800 meter run (2:11.92), respectively.
Three other Mountaineers found success last weekend and qualified for BIG EAST at the Penn State Quad. Junior Maria Stover placed seventh in the 1000 meter run (2:58.66), senior Alexis Noel finished sixth in the triple jump (11.28) and freshman Natasha Redman successfully cleared 1.65 meters in the high jump.
Finally, freshman April Rotilio is off to a fast start for WVU, having already qualified in the 200 meter dash (24.78) and the 60 meter dash (7.76).
The Mountaineers will return to competition on Feb. 3 when they host the State Farm Shell Games. Competition will take place at the WVU Shell Building and is expected to last all day.
