MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team topped Akron today by a score of 4571-4519 at the WVU rifle range.
West Virginia (5-3, 2-3) led by only one point (2286-2285) after the air rifle competition which set the stage for an exciting smallbore match. The Mountaineers emerged victorious after the smallbore competition, defeating the Zips 2285-2234.
“It’s a really good win,” said coach Jon Hammond. “We were able to carry on the success from last week. We actually improved a lot on smallbore and were down a bit in air rifle so we know where we have points to make up.”
Lafe Kunkel had a successful afternoon as his air rifle and smallbore scores (581 and 579, respectively) were season highs for the junior shooter. Adam Somers totaled 561 points in the smallbore competition which tied his personal best and was also a season high for the senior. Amy Smith, Brian Launer and Kunkel finished in the top three in the smallbore competition while Kunkel and Launer recorded the top two scores in air rifle.
The Mountaineers will return to action at the WVU rifle range when they face Mississippi on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 8 a.m.
