Track: WVU Has Strong Showing at Penn State Quad

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – West Virginia University’s track and field team qualified three runners for the BIG EAST Championship at the Penn State Quad on Saturday, Jan. 20.
Junior Maria Stover finished seventh in the 1000 meter run with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 2:58.66. The Morgantown, W.Va., native was followed across the finish line by teammate Alison Spiker, who clocked in at eighth with a time of 2:59.31.
Senior Alexis Noel placed sixth in the triple jump. The Detroit, Mich., native’s leap of 11.28 meters qualifies her for BIG EAST.
The last Mountaineer to qualify for BIG EAST was freshman Natasha Redman in the high jump. The Martinsburg, W.Va., native successfully cleared 1.65 meters.
Three other Mountaineers turned in top 10 performances on Saturday. Freshman Kristen Loughry placed sixth in both the 60 meter hurdles (9.15) and the pole vault (3.21 meters), junior Maggie Smith finished seventh in the 500 meter run (1:21.71) and freshman teammate Ayana Young followed with a ninth place finish (1:23.50).
The Mountaineers will travel back to University Park on Jan. 26-27 and compete in the National Open. The meet, hosted by Penn State, will last all day, both days.
