FAYETSVILLE, Ark. – Sophomores Clara Grandt and Raeleen Hunter both qualified for the BIG EAST Championship while competing at the Razorback Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Randal Tyson Track Complex.
Grandt, a native of West Union, W.Va., placed fourth in the mile with a time of 5:05.54. Hunter, out of Beaumont, Alberta, Canada, finished fifth in the 800 meter run, stopping the clock at 2:11.92.
Additionally, senior Halimah Bashir finished the 400 meter dash at 59.21, good enough for 24th place.
Overall, the Mountaineers qualified five for BIG EAST at the invitational. Junior Abbie Stechschulte’s win in the pentathlon on Friday with 3,907 points was also a NCAA provisional score.
“The season’s still early but I’m pretty pleased,” says sixth year coach Jeff Huntoon. “I think it was very worthwhile, especially for our young girls, to come down here and compete at the same complex where nationals will be held. We know we still have more work to do.”
The Mountaineers will next travel to University Park, Pa., and compete in the National Open on Jan. 26-27. The meet, hosted by Penn State, will last all day, both days.
