Gymnastics: No. 11 WVU Wins Meet at Pitt

PITTSBURGH – The No. 11 WVU gymnastics team took first place with 193.150 points at a quad meet at Pitt with Maryland and No. 9 Michigan State on Friday, Jan. 19, at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh.
Michigan State took second (192.150) while host Pitt placed third (190.725) and Maryland finished fourth (189.375).
Janáe Cox took the all-around title for the second week in a row with a 38.9 after scoring totals of 9.8 (bars), 9.575 (beam), 9.7 (floor) and 9.825 (vault), respectively. Individually, Cox also placed third on vault, bars and floor.
Junior Jaime Gold also placed third in the floor exercise with a 9.7, while EAGL specialist of the week Tynisha Dennis took second with a 9.725 for West Virginia.
WVU’s event totals progressed on each event with the best score of the night coming on its final event (vault) with a 48.825.
The Mountaineers put up scores of 47.875 on the uneven bars and 48.075 on beam for a total of 95.950 after the first two rotations to trail only Pitt, who scored a 96.250 on the first two events.
But West Virginia would make a comeback and take the lead in the third event on the floor exercise led by Dennis, who scored a team-high 9.725. WVU posted a composite score of 48.375 in the event and jumped Pitt to move into first place at 144.325 before heading to the vault to preserve the win.
West Virginia moves to 4-1 on the year. Michigan State improves to 2-2 while Pitt goes to 1-2 and Maryland drops to 2-3.
The meet was the first meeting for WVU against an EAGL opponent this season and the Mountaineers will face all three schools at least one more time this season.
West Virginia next competes on Friday, Jan. 26, at No. 25 Kentucky with North Carolina and Maryland.
