MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s track & field coach Jeff Huntoon today announced the signing of three promising student-athletes for the 2007-08 year.
An in-state talent, an Ohio jumper and one Pennsylvania star join the already signed Toronto native Kate Harrison.
Chelsea Carrier, a Buckhannon, W.Va., native, is an AAU national runner-up in the heptathlon. Currently finishing her senior year at Buckhannon-Upshur High School, Carrier is a seven-time W.Va. state champion in numerous events. An excellent sprinter as well, Huntoon says Carrier will focus her talents on the heptathlon once she is enrolled at WVU.
“She should make an immediate impact on the conference and the region,” says Huntoon. “She has the ability to excel in many different areas.”
Katelyn Williams, a three-year letterwinner at West Geauga High School, joins the Mountaineers from Chesterland, Ohio. A standout student, Williams placed third in the high jump at the Ohio State Championship. Holding a personal best high jump of five feet, seven inches, Huntoon plans to train Williams mainly for the pentathlon and heptathlon under current Mountaineer, junior Abbie Stechschulte.
The last recruit for WVU is Alexandra Acker from Erie, Pa. A senior at Erie McDowell High School, Acker has been a numerous state qualifier in the pole vault and a top four finisher. With a personal best of 12 feet, two inches, Acker looks to add depth and strength to the event and train under talented assistant coach Tim Sullivan.
“I’m really looking forward to having all of the recruits on campus and training with the team,” says Huntoon. ““There was a lot of effort put in to this past fall’s recruiting period and I’m very pleased with all the results. These are all kids that are excited about being Mountaineers. They’re all looking forward to the opportunity and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
