PALMYRA, Pa. – The West Virginia University rifle team had an impressive weekend at the Palmyra Invitational as the squad shot a season-high 4571 point aggregate.
Brian Launer led the team with 573 total points in smallbore and was followed closely by Lafe Kunkel (572) and Amy Smith (563). The smallbore sum of 2265 is a season-high for the Mountaineers.
Paul Miller registered 580 points to contribute to the team’s season-high 2306 air rifle sum which was only one point shy of the school record set by last year’s team. Launer and Kunkel added identical scores of 579. Kunkel’s score is his highest air rifle mark of the season.
“It was a very successful weekend,” said coach Jon Hammond. “It sets us up for the rest of the semester. It puts us on a good note and hopefully we can build on each score.”
Competition will continue to take place over the next two weekends as several more schools from across the country journey to Palmyra, Pa., to compete in the nation’s largest indoor match.
While waiting to see how their scores measure up against the remaining schools, the Mountaineers will next host Akron at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the WVU rifle range.
