Swimming: Mountaineers Dominate at Tri-Meet

MEET RESULTS
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s swimming and diving team picked up four victories on Sunday, Jan. 14, by defeating both St. Bonaventure and BIG EAST foe Georgetown at the WVU Natatorium.
The 20th ranked men’s squad (8-0, 3-0) defeated the Bonnies, 138-95, and the Hoyas, 167-55, while the women’s team (6-2, 1-2) edged both opponents as well, 141-99 and 174-64, respectively. Both the men’s and women’s teams won nine of the day’s 13 events.
The Mountaineers got the day started with victories in the 400 medley relay. Juniors Tina Gabrilo and Erin Tudor, with freshmen Stephanie Shupe and Kitti Veisz, clocked in at 3:54.51. The men stopped the clock at 3:25.72. Senior Kyle Williams, junior Kevin Donohue, sophomore Nathan Farmer and freshman Ivan Tolic comprised for the win.
Junior Pablo Marmolejo led WVU for the second weekend in a row with three individual wins. The Mexico City, Mexico, native took first in the 200 free (1:44.16), the 200 fly (1:52.91) and the 200 back (1:52.56)
Sophomore Taylor Stallings and freshman Shaunna Purtell stepped up for the women’s team, taking two events each. Stallings was victorious in the 200 IM (2:09.02) and the 200 fly (2:07.90), while Purtell won the 200 free (1:53.94) and the 500 free (5:04.15).
Sophomore Lindsey Largo and freshman Justin Galbreath captured first in the 1000 free, 10:15.32 and 9:46.36, respectively.
The 50 free was won by sophomore Rachel Fedyk (25.01) and freshman Ivan Tolic (21.24), and the 100 free was won by freshman Kitti Veisz (51.94) and sophomore Tony Cisneros (46.69).
Junior Nick Delic continued his great season by taking the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.94.
Freshman Kayla Andrews blew past the competition in the 200 back with a winning time of 2:05.06. Junior Felipe Cunha took the last event for the Mountaineers, winning the 200 breast in 2:08.67.
The Mountaineers are now on the road for the rest of the season. They will next travel to Cincinnati and battle the Bearcats on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m.
