MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team returns to action as it travels to Palmyra, Pa., this weekend to partake in the Palmyra Invitational.
The Mountaineers (4-3, 2-3) will shoot in the first of three weekends of competition at one of the largest indoor matches in the country. West Virginia’s scores will be combined with the results of many other colleges at the end of the three weeks.
“It’s a really good match to have coming back from break,” said WVU head coach Jon Hammond. “It’s a really good benchmark to see where we’re at team-wise. It’s also good for individuals to see where they stack up against a host of other juniors across the country.”
West Virginia last competed on Dec. 2 when it defeated Tennessee Tech 4561-4445 at the WVU rifle range. The 4561 aggregated team score was a season high for the Mountaineers. The win over the Golden Eagles is also WVU’s second 100-plus point victory this year.
Freshman Doug McAllister counted for the first time in both disciplines against Tennessee Tech. The budding talent registered not only a season high, but a match high 575 point air rifle sum in the competition.
