MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University and the BIG EAST conference have announced the 2006-07 women’s basketball schedule.
WVU will play 16 teams that competed in postseason play last year, including 12 teams that qualified for the 2005-06 NCAA Tournament, highlighted by five contests against squads that at least made it to the Sweet 16 last season.
In non-conference action, the slate is spotlighted by contests at LSU, at Tennessee, vs. Texas A&M in Los Angeles, vs. Virginia Tech in Baton Rouge, La., and a home contest against Oakland - all teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament last season.
In BIG EAST play, WVU will face every team once with its repeat opponent being, for the second consecutive year, Villanova. The Mountaineers will play 14 home contests, including eight BIG EAST games, at the WVU Coliseum highlighted by visits from Connecticut, Villanova, South Florida and St. John’s. Providence, Seton Hall, Syracuse and Cincinnati will also come to Morgantown. Conference road trips are at Marquette, Villanova, DePaul, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Pitt and Louisville.
WVU opens the season Sunday, Nov. 12, against the LSU Tigers at the Basketball Travelers Classic at the Maravich Center. WVU will take on Virginia Tech, Monday, Nov. 13, and will complete the three-day tournament with a game against Howard, coached by WVU’s all-time leading scorer Cathy Parson, Tuesday, Nov. 14. WVU travels to Tennessee, Wednesday, Dec. 20.
“There is no doubt this is the toughest schedule I’ve had in my time here at WVU,” coach Mike Carey said. “It might be the toughest schedule in the history of the program. However, by playing in the BIG EAST conference we feel we can compete on a national level throughout the country. We’re excited for the start of the season.”
Game times and television contests will be announced in October. Practice for the 2006-07 season begins Friday, October 13.
WVU is fresh off a 2005-06 season in which the Mountaineers advanced to the BIG EAST championship game for the first time in program history.
