MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach Sergio Lopez has announced the 2006-2007 schedule.
Both the men and women are coming off a winning 2005 season that saw five Mountaineers named All-Americans.
The men’s side returns many strong swimmers. Among them are senior Kyle Williams, juniors Nick Delic and Pablo Marmolejo, and sophomore Andrew Langenfeld, all 2005 honorable mention All-Americans.
The women enter the season determined to build on the success achieved last year. The team will look to juniors Maritza Paredes and Tina Gabrillo and sophomore Isabel Perez for leadership and inspiration in the pool.
Coach Lopez is excited for the experience returning for the Mountaineers.
“I think we have people here that know we need to compete, to be excited and to understand that we are here to be the best that we can be,” says Lopez.
The squad kicks off the season with the WVU Relay Meet on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 8:30. The team will play host to Marshall, California (Pa.), Fairmont State and Wheeling Jesuit.
The team will be tested when it hosts Penn State on Oct. 19, before it moves on to the Maryland Invite held Nov. 16-18.
“They (Maryland) have a nice natatorium,” says Lopez. “It’s a good place for us to have a good test and see where we are.”
The team will close out the season at the BIG EAST Championships, where it hopes to place in the top five and move more swimmers on to the NCAA’s.
“I hope to climb up one or two places in the BIG EAST this year,” says Lopez. “I think we have the talent to do that.”
