MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team received its highest ranking in school history on Tuesday, Sept. 5, when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) tabbed the Mountaineers No. 10 in the country.
WVU (3-0-1) is currently the second highest ranked team in the country from the BIG EAST behind only Notre Dame, who currently ranks eighth.
The ranking marks the first time that the NSCAA has selected West Virginia into its Top 25. The Mountaineers’ previous highest ranking occurred in 2004 when Soccer America ranked the team No. 17 on Nov 10.
WVU has also been tabbed No. 21 this week by SoccerTimes.com, No. 23 by Soccer America and No. 25 by CollegeSoccerNews.com.
The Mountaineers are off to one of their best starts in school history through four matches. One of the biggest wins in recent history came on Saturday, Sept. 2, when WVU upset No. 17 Cal State Northridge 2-1 at Dick Dlesk Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va.
West Virginia has allowed only one goal in 390 minutes of soccer this season, while scoring four. Junior midfielder Andy Wright leads the team in points with a goal and an assist to date.
The Mountaineers are just one of two undefeated teams in the BIG EAST. Syracuse currently sits at 2-0 in the BIG EAST Red Division, while WVU sits atop the Blue Division.
West Virginia returns to action on Friday, Sept. 8, when it opens up BIG EAST play by hosting Cincinnati at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
