MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 18 West Virginia University women’s soccer team cruised past Binghamton 4-0, on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 3, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
West Virginia (4-0) was led by preseason all-BIG EAST selection Ashley Banks, who scored two goals and assisted on another on the afternoon.
After forward Kim Bonilla was fouled in the penalty box, Banks opened the game’s scoring by netting the ensuing penalty kick in the game’s 43rd minute. That would be WVU’s only goal of the half, however, as Binghamton goalie Kristie Bowers allowed just one goal on 26 first half shots.
“The girls did a great job of adjusting in the second half and we were able to capitalize on our opportunities,” Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said.
In the second half, Banks would strike again by banging home a rebound off of Greer Barnes’ shot in the 54th minute for her third goal of the season. Banks would add an assist three minutes later when Kiley Harris’ header slipped past the Binghamton defense into the net.
Freshman Carolyn Blank tacked on the final goal of the contest set up by Barnes in the 65th minute. West Virginia finished the day with 44 shots, a season high, 22 of which were on goal.
Binghamton (0-3-1) failed to record a shot on WVU senior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman. Bannerman recorded her 27th career shutout and has now only seen four shots come her way in the last two games.
The Mountaineers return to action Friday, Sept. 8, in State College, Pa., to take on No. 3 Penn State at 1 p.m.
