I should have known something big was up when our normally sullen IT guy smiled at me when I showed up for work on Monday.

“What’s up with the smile IT guy?” I asked. “Did Microsoft send you some new beta software? Or did the boys in your computer club figure out how to infect a MAC with a virus?”
No, this was much bigger than that. IT guy informed me that over 400 emails had been recovered from our mail server that had long ago been pronounced dead. Some of the oldest dated back as far as seven years ago.
Just for my personal amusement I started to scan through the petrified email -- you never know, maybe I missed Readers Digest notifying me I was a billionaire or something.
Instead, I came upon a series of sports questions that at the time may have been legitimate, but now -- how shall we say -- have kind of been answered. The names of the e-mailers have been removed to protect the innocent, and also so their friends won’t heckle them.

Dear Tony:
I’m thrilled that Rich Rodriguez has come back to West Virginia to coach the Mountaineers. It’s about time we get someone in here that will throw the ball all over the field. I’m sick and tired of seeing that Up-The-Middle-Meter at Mountaineer Field. Tony, I know you like the running game but people just don’t get excited watching a team that always runs the ball.
I saw a few down in the Georgia Dome last January that seemed to like it.

Dear Tony:
I had the chance to watch the WVU basketball team practice and scrimmage against each other last Saturday in Morgantown. We have problems. I like this new coach and everything he stands for, but a team that lives by the 3-point shot will never have success. The Big East is a power conference; we must attract dominant inside players to score in the paint. Mark it down, until we get horses up front we won’t win.
Are you sure really smart guys around the perimeter won’t work?

Dear Toni (sic):
I know you spend most of your time talking about football and basketball, but I like all of WVU sports teams. Do you think we’ll ever see the day when both the men and women’s soccer teams will be ranked nationally?
How about today?

Hey Tony:
I’ll be graduating from WVU this coming May. It’s been awesome watching Avon Cobourne over the last four years. I don’t think WVU will ever have a running back that can be as dominant as Avon. I know ‘ever’ is a long time … but I don’t see anyone touching his records for many years to come.
Can ‘many’ be just four years later?

Dear Tony:
I just finished going through Athlon's pre-season magazine. Once again we get no love from these guys. I get so sick and tired of being slighted in these magazines, on TV, and in the polls. Will we ever be a Top 5 team and get some love from Sports Illustrated or ESPN?
How about throwing in a sophomore getting mentioned for the Heisman Trophy while were at it.

Dear Tony:
This is just a short note to tell you that we really enjoyed the recent spring game. The team looks like they’ve got a chance to be good. We’re all looking forward to this season. I really hope they do something with the traffic problems up there, though. I don’t think it can get can any worse.
Wanna make a little wager on that?
Keep those emails rolling in. With the help of our IT department, I should be able to get to this batch a little bit quicker.
