MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team remained in the seventh spot in Soccer America’s poll after posting a 1-0-1 record this weekend in two BIG EAST matches. WVU has now been ranked in a major poll for 46 of the last 48 weeks.
BIG EAST power Notre Dame moved into the top spot after Florida State was knocked off by ACC rival North Carolina 2-1, in Chapel Hill, N.C., this past weekend. Notre Dame is expected to be the consensus No. 1, after holding down the top spots in both the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz polls the last couple of weeks.
UNC comes in at No. 2 after taking down the Seminoles, who dropped to third, while Portland, Santa Clara and UCLA round out the six teams ahead of West Virginia.
WVU senior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman and junior defender Natalie Cocchi were both named to the BIG EAST honor roll for their performances this past weekend. Bannerman picked up two more shutouts over the weekend and now has 30 for her career, while Cocchi scored two goals and led a defense that allowed a combined 10 shots against two BIG EAST opponents.
The Mountaineers (8-0-2, 2-0-1 BIG EAST) cruised past the Syracuse Orange on Friday, 5-0, before playing to a scoreless tie on the road BIG EAST American divisional rival at St. John’s. The 0-0 tie marks the first time WVU, who had the nation’s highest scoring offense, has failed to score in a game this season.
The Mountaineers travel to South Bend, Ind., to face top-ranked and undefeated Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m., at Alumni Field. WVU will then wrap up the road trip at DePaul on Sunday, Oct. 1, in Chicago, Ill.
